Tunit produces diesel tuning systems for commercial vehicles, pick-ups, SUVs and cars. A tuning module works by adjusting the signals between the engine's sensors and its ECU, principally fuel rail pressure and injection timing, to release performance the manufacturer left on the table for reasons of market segmentation, emissions margin and global fuel quality variation.

What it actually delivers

On a modern common rail diesel, a well developed module typically increases power and, more usefully, torque across the middle of the rev range. For a towing vehicle or a loaded pick-up that mid range torque is what matters, because it determines whether the vehicle pulls a gradient in fourth or drops to third.

Fuel consumption

Extra torque low in the rev range can reduce consumption in steady driving, because the engine works less hard for the same road speed. It will not reduce consumption if the extra performance is used, which is worth being honest about.

Tuning affects the manufacturer warranty, insurance must be informed, and the modification may need to be declared. Consider these before fitting rather than after.
