AMP Research, the Company That Invented the Powered Running Board

AMP Research is an American engineering company based in California that solved a problem every pick-up owner knows. A tall truck is hard to climb into, but a fixed side step ruins the ground clearance and the approach angle you paid for. Their answer was the PowerStep, an electrically actuated running board that extends when a door opens and retracts flush under the rocker panel when it closes.

How the PowerStep works

The step deploys roughly 18 cm below the rocker in under a second, triggered by the door latch signal. When the doors are shut it tucks completely out of the way, so the truck keeps its off-road geometry and its clean profile. The linkage is sealed, the motor is weather rated, and the whole assembly is designed to keep operating through mud, road salt and freezing temperatures.

The wider range

Beyond the PowerStep and PowerStep XL, AMP Research produces the BedStep, a bumper mounted retractable step for load bed access, the BedStep2 for reaching over the side of the bed, the BedXTender HD bed extender, and the ResearchStep for commercial vans.

Build quality

Components are aluminium and stainless steel rather than mild steel, the boards are rated to well over 100 kg, and the products carry a multi year warranty on the mechanism and the finish. AMP Research is now part of the RealTruck group.
