T-Max, Winches and Off-Road Recovery Equipment

T-Max produces winches and recovery equipment for 4x4s, pick-ups, ATVs and utility vehicles, occupying the part of the market where the priority is getting genuine winching capability onto a vehicle without the price of a premium brand.

The winch ranges

The ATW and HEW series cover the common capacities from around 4 to 8 tonnes, with sealed housings, planetary gear trains, wireless and wired remotes and a choice of steel or synthetic rope. Synthetic rope is worth the difference on most builds: it weighs a fraction of steel, does not store the same dangerous energy if it fails, and can be handled without gloves shredding your hands.

Choosing a capacity

The rule of thumb is a winch rated at roughly 1.5 times the vehicle's gross weight. That sounds excessive until you consider that the rated capacity applies only to the first layer of rope on the drum, and it drops significantly as the drum fills up. A winch that is nominally adequate will be working at its limit on the outer layers.
