AVM, Free-Wheeling Hubs

AVM is a Brazilian manufacturer of free-wheeling hubs, and it is one of the few companies that has specialised in this component for decades. Brazil has an enormous population of older, mechanically simple 4x4s in hard working use, which is exactly the environment in which a good locking hub proves itself.

What a free-wheeling hub does

On a part time 4x4, the front wheels turn the front axle shafts, differential and propshaft even when four wheel drive is not engaged. That costs fuel, creates noise and wears components continuously for no benefit. A free-wheeling hub disconnects the wheel from the axle shaft, so the entire front driveline stops turning.

Manual and automatic

Manual hubs are turned by hand at the wheel, which means getting out of the vehicle, but they are mechanically simple, extremely reliable and unambiguous about their state. Automatic hubs engage themselves when drive is applied, which is more convenient but adds complexity and can be reluctant to disengage.

Why replace worn original hubs

Original hubs on an older 4x4 are frequently seized, cracked or partially engaged, which is one of the most common causes of a vehicle that will not properly engage four wheel drive when it matters.
