Factor 55, Closed System Recovery

Factor 55 is an American manufacturer from Idaho that set out to fix one of the most dangerous habits in vehicle recovery. The traditional winch hook is an open system: if the line goes slack or the hook slips off the recovery point under load, a hook attached to a steel or synthetic line under enormous tension becomes a projectile.

The closed system principle

Factor 55's FlatLink, FlatLink E, ProLink and UltraHook replace the open hook with a closed connection. The line terminates in a machined billet aluminium link that is shackled to the recovery point, so there is no hook that can disengage and nothing that can fly. The load path is fully captured from the winch drum to the recovery point.

Manufacturing and testing

Components are CNC machined from billet aluminium in the United States, anodised, and proof tested with published working load limits and minimum breaking strengths rather than vague marketing ratings. Each product is stamped with its rating.
