Bilstein, the Company That Invented the Gas Pressure Shock

Bilstein is a German engineering company from Ennepetal in North Rhine-Westphalia with roots going back to 1873. In 1957 Bilstein introduced the first gas pressure monotube damper, a design that solved the foaming and fade problems of twin tube shocks and changed the industry permanently. Almost every performance damper made since is a descendant of that idea.

Why monotube matters

In a monotube damper the oil and the gas are separated by a floating piston, so the oil never aerates. The whole outer tube is a working cylinder, which allows a larger piston, better heat dissipation and far more consistent damping when the shock is worked hard. On a loaded pick-up on a broken Romanian county road, that consistency is the difference between control and a rattle.

The ranges

B4 is the OEM replacement line, matching factory ride characteristics for repairs. B6 offers firmer damping for vehicles carrying extra weight, towing or fitted with accessories, and is the natural choice for an equipped 4x4. B8 is shortened for vehicles running lowering springs. B12 combines springs and dampers as a matched kit. B14 and B16 are height adjustable coilover systems for road and track.

Original equipment credibility

Bilstein supplies dampers as original equipment to Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Audi and Volkswagen, and has a long record in DTM, rallying and Dakar. The same engineering discipline goes into the 4x4 and light commercial ranges.
